:: Today's Quote ::

:: "To despair is to turn your back on God" ::
:: Mrs. Cuthbert ~ Anne of Green Gables ::

:: Our home is going through a dry spell of sorts. Times just are not going our way. I know that this too shall pass and that our trust is in the maker of heaven & earth and so we have nothing to fear, however it's hard not to feel down about the place we are in right now ::

:: I am SURE things will be better soon and the sun will shine again on our little family, but as of right now if I could ask you to pray. Pray these trials pass quickly and that we understand the full reason we have had to be challenged in this way ::

:: Old House New Look ~ Part One ::

:: I've decided to start a new series on my blog. We have been working on our house since we moved in at the end of April 2007. Most of the major work was done in the first 6-8 weeks of ownership but since then we have polished and made the finishing touches to the place we call home ::

:: So here is the first of many posts - the Living & Dining Room ::

:: This is the original state the Living & Dining was in when we walked through it in February ::

:: This is what it looked like on Saturday night before the finishing touches & in the middle of us (aka: Paul) putting up the drapes ::

:: And here is the living room pretty much finished ::

:: And dining room again pretty much finished ::

:: This is our new table (as of April) that we found on Craigslist for $300 - such a steal as it's an original Broyhill (don't ask me, but I've heard it a great brand). Still don't know if I'm going to paint it or leave it original. At any rate, I love the style of it...my one thing I wanted was tall ladder back chairs for the tall boys I'll have in this house and the many meals we'll get to share around this table ::

:: And here is the view from the entrance to the dining & living room ::

:: So all together from the original pictures we made the following changes ::

~ Removed carpet and replaced with laminate flooring
~ Painted walls (touching up took longer than painting)
~ Painted baseboards
~ Replaced blinds
~ Added curtains
~ Painted railing black instead of the white it was originally

:: Happy Birthday Lise! ::

:: The other night we had Lisa along with her family over to celebrate her birthday ::

:: We had a great time hanging out eating her favorite type of cake {Lemon - you know the kind of lemon that gets you right in the back of the mouth} drinking many cups of coffee and playing Apples to Apples & Mad Gab ::

:: We laughed so hard during mad gab that I drooled, yes drooled all over the table. I was trying to say "George & Barbara Bush" and apparently I sounded hilarious cause we were all laughing our heads off! I was laughing cause everyone was laughing at me and I just couldn't hear what I was saying! ::

:: Thanks for turning another year older Lise and giving us a reason to get together, celebrate and eat cake! ::
:: FYI - this was my second birthday cake I made within a week. I made one for my friend Cathy's eldest baby Cameron - His choice for cake was also lemon! You can see his cake featured on Cathy's blog ::

:: Flipping Out ::

:: Okay, so here is a confession...I am ADDICTED to the show Flipping Out ::

:: I'm talking the world has to pretty much blow up for me to miss watching this show. It is about a design team that works with Jeff Lewis and I LOVE IT!!!! ::

:: The actual business is Brown Design ~ their design taste is oh so lovely and I wish...if this life were a perfect one and I had pillows that needed to be fluffed {my pillows are all fiber fill not feather...I'm not at the feather place yet ;-)} I would get Jeff & Ryan to help me design my home. Oh and another small problem would be the money, but if life was perfect money wouldn't be an issue! ::

:: Sowing Little Seeds ::

:: My girlfriend Trista has started a fabulous new business just for little people. It's called "Sowing little Seeds" ::

:: Trista has been a pre-school teacher for years and is now Mom to one beautiful little girl and thus doesn't want to work outside the home. So, she has overhauled her home to accommodate a multi-purpose room so that she can teach little people right in her home! ::

:: ASAQD Answers ::

:: Okay peeps here are the answers, hope you had fun..and if there are any other questions that I missed or you still want to ask, I'll keep the comments for that post open for the rest of today (thursday) ::

Q: Who and where do you get your hair done?

A: Blessings Hair @ 604-533-2772
108-19475 Fraser Highway
, Surrey

I usually have Suzie do my hair but last time I had the sweetest little Thai lady, but I don’t know her name.

Q: What makes you a good wife?

A: I don’t know as I am a good wife, you would have to ask Paul this. I’ll see if he has an answer for you.

PA: I think that for all of you to take the time to sit down in your busy lives and write out a question or a few…. All Shawna has to do is look at all of these questions (and her answers) and she will see for herself what makes her a good wife. All of the diverse projects she is involved and interested in keep her fresh and sharp. I’m the only dull one in here…..

Q: What makes you a good mother?

A: I’m a good mother (most of the time) because I have a good mother.
Now what makes me a good mother…hmmm I was going to say that I am a good mother because I put them before me, but that’s not always a good thing. So I would say I’m a good mother because I think my kids know where their “safe zone” is. They know home is safe (emotionally/physically/spiritually).

Q: What makes you a good friend?
A: I don’t know cause every time I think of a good thing that I am, there is a bad thing to go right along with it ;) I am one thing as a friend, which is thoughtful.

Q:If you could change one thing about your life now what would it be?
A: My weight

Q: Do you have any really BAD habits?
A: I really don’t have any bad habits…I’ll consult Paul on this one and see if he can come up with any.

PA: Paul gave me a few but options but they were not really bad habits….I’ll leave it with him and see if he comes up with any.

Q: What food will you not eat...ever?
A: Brussell Sprouts.

Q: Is there anything about yourself that totally bugs you?
A: No, I pretty much like myself…it would be hard to live as me if I didn’t like myself. When I do find something (or am told that I am this or that way) I change. I don’t wait. I just ask for God’s help and wisdom and change.

Q: If you could go back in time to one special moment in your life what would that be?
A: Honeymoon in Hawaii with my love.

Q: What hobby do you find most enjoyable?
A: Probably baking because you get to see others enjoy it as well. However my scrapbooked photo album gets a daily visit from Jacob. It’s so cute to see him giggle and talk to the book.

Q: What would be your perfect "Shawna night out" without your husband and your boys?
A: Dinner @ the beach, a walk through downtown and window shopping, a hot Starbucks, and a great movie…all preferably with some great friends.

Q: What is something about your childhood that you want your kids to experience?
A: Camping, I have great camping memories...we didn’t have a lot of money but we always had an amazing time.

Q: What are some financial tips that you can share that have really helped you in budgeting your household?
A: Hmmm, I don’t know, I would probably say don’t live up to the Jones’ ~ Live your own life. And remember when you are shopping that if it’s not a need leave it on the shelf.

Q: Are you going to have anymore kids?
A: If you asked me two days ago…NO, but as of today…YES the plan is to have more kids, however that’s our plan so who knows what God has in store for us. And no probably not more than three, we both came from families of three so that is what we are comfortable with.

Q: What is your favorite clothing store for yourself? For your kids?
A: Ha Ha Ha – have you seen my wardrobe??? Mental note: Don’t shop where Shawna shops!!!! In all seriousness, I am so horribly frugal! Cheap to the bone. So to answer your question, I usually get my clothes from Superstore, their Joe line is great and trendy and I can usually find a great deal…like just the other day I bought white jeans (I know so practical for a mom of two boys!) for $5.49.

A: And for my boys I usually go to the kids swap @ Cloverdale Fairgrounds. I stock up a few months before. Plus our kids have great G&G’s that buy them clothes on a regular basis. Every once in a while I will buy something from Costco in the states (pj’s & sleepers) or find great deals @ Target.

Q: What's something you really like about yourself?
A: Hmmm, I would have to say my honesty. You don’t have to worry about not knowing what I think, cause I’ll let you know what it is! This is also my worst enemy!

A: And physically I think I’ve got great boobs – ha ha ha, does that sound shallow and it just might, but I’ve got great perky boobs. Thanks to my great genes!

Q: What is your favorite restaurant to eat and and Why?
A: Anywhere that Paul is there with me (there is a reason behind this). I know corny as all get out but I really don’t have a favourite restaurant. I can however think of a specific restaurant that we went to in California it was a Mexican restaurant and it was AMAZING. I do love Mexican food.

A: Now for you local folk, I would recommend trying out the Washington Avenue Grill in White Rock (at the east end of WR). There is a 2 for 1 in the Entertainment book. Expect to spend $50.00 - $75.00 but if you go on a Saturday or Sunday I believe there is live music. Such a great atmosphere!

Q: What is your least favorite restaurant to eat at and why?
A: I would have to say little hole in the wall restaurants, this is why I said that I always like to have Paul there. He has worked in the restaurant business and has a great sense of what restaurant is good and what one we should by-pass.

Q: What is your one indulgence - if you could have any one thing and it would MAKE your day, what would it be?
A: Fresh flowers from Flowers & Co.

Q: If you are sitting down to watch a movie at home, all snuggled in, what 3 things would you have with you?
A: Paul, wearing my lulu outfit & a diet pop

Q: What is your favorite cupcake recipe?
A: Thus far a super easy white cake recipe Laura sent over to me…the cupcakes end up flat so I can put tonnes of icing on top – email me directly and I will send it to you.

Q: What's your favorite organziational tip/tool?
A: If you have a moment, don’t wait on doing that chore. Do it and get it done. Don’t wait on someone else to come and do it or if it’s not “your job” in the house. Don’t do it with a bad attitude but with joy that you are furthering your home & working for the greater cause…the family.

Q: What do you see yourself doing 20 years from now?
A: Taking a trip to Europe with my family – I want to rent a home in Greece for a couple months one summer and have my kids come over to visit, that is what I would like to be doing in 20 years.

Q: If you HAD to be someone else for a day - who would you be and why?
A: Marilyn Monroe. I don’t know why, she’s just the first person that I think of when I think of who’s shoes I would like to wear for a day. Maybe I could change her outlook of herself…maybe I could have given her hope and a moral backbone to be a woman that respects herself?

Q: What is the most romantic thing Paul has done for you?
A: My most favourite things that Paul does for me are the little things like leaving a new cd in my cd player in my car, packing my water bottle, wrapping his arms around me, bringing me a Starbucks coffee fresh from the coffee shop the first day we are home with our new baby. It’s the little things, a note on the counter when we are passing in the wind.

Q: Your favourite dessert?
A: I love them all!

Q: Favourite paint colour?
A: Barharbor beige

Q: Favourite home keeping tip?
A: Wet dust…wipe everything down with a wet cloth, none of these swiffer type things, they just spread the dust (in my opinion) plus they add to my carbon footprint and Lord knows my hairspray is enough of a carbon footprint for my whole family!

Q: Favourite Bible verse?
A: Psalm 23 & 24

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.

Q: Fave quote?
A: I don’t know cause I always screw up other things people say…I get laughed at for this often. I would have to say my own quote: “life it too short not to be organized” ~ Shawna

Q: Craziest thing you have done in your adult life?
A: I’m not a very crazy person, I’m so boring!

Q: What does your bedroom look like and what would you do to re-decorate it?
A: I will take a picture of my bedroom and post this as soon as the child sleeping in it is awake.

Q: umm..do you prefer lights on or off???hehe
A: On ;)

:: Deceptively Delicious ::

:: Chocolate Chip Cookies with a twist ::

:: What in this picture doesn't belong??? ::

Jessica Seinfeld’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

This recipe is from Jessica Seinfeld's much talked about book, "Deceptively Delicious."

These are so easy and fast to make, but watch out for flying chickpeas! If using a standing mixer, partially cover the bowl with a dish towel to keep the chickpeas from flying out. (Of course my kids think it’s hysterical when this happens.)Prep: 20 minutes, Total: 31-33 minutes, Makes 2 dozen cookies

Nonstick cooking spray
1 cup firmly packed light or dark brown sugar brown sugar
¾ cup trans fat free soft tub margarine spread
2 large egg whites
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 (15 oz) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed (aka garbanzo beans)
2 cups (12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips
¾ cup chopped walnuts (optional)
¾ cup raisins (optional)
2 cups all purpose flour
½ cup old fashioned oats
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 t salt

Preheat oven to 350. Coat a baking sheet with cooking spray.

In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the sugar and margarine with a wooden spoon or on medium speed until smooth. Beat in the egg whites and vanilla, then the chickpeas and chocolate chips. Add the flour, oats, baking soda and salt, and mix on low speed until a thick dough forms.

Drop the dough by the tablespoonful onto the baking sheet, spacing the cookies about 2 inches apart. Press gently with a fork to flatten. Bake until the cookies are golden brown and just set, 11 to 13 minutes; do not overbake. Transfer to a rack to cool.

Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

:: Now I was really skeptical about her recipes but thought since I had the stuff I may as well try to make these - we really liked them, really liked them..We were totally surprised! So give it a try and add some more fiber and protein to your diet through cookies ~ you just might like it! ::
