:: Dresser re-Dressed ::

:: So following with my theme for this year, I decided instead of going the traditional way to obtain a new dresser for Jacob aka: to buy one, I decided to go down all other avenues first...hey if I could save $150 - $300 on a dresser, I'm game! ::

:: I looked on craigslist.ca in the free section, nothing popped out to me. I looked in the "buy" section. Again nothing popped out at me ::

:: So then I got the wonderful idea to put it out on facebook as my status that I was looking for a dresser, hook, line and sinker, I got a bite! And this is what I ended up with{please excuse the crappy colour of the photos, it was 9:00 pm when I decided to start painting it, but you get the idea} ::
:: My girlfriend was just getting ready to give this away to goodwill. A very lovely, practical, 6 drawer girls dresser, Paul wasn't quite sold on it, but I was & it was free and not only did we gain a dresser, we got to have a great visit with our dear friends in the meantime...we are blessed ::

:: Here is the dresser, all finished up and in my big little boys room, it took some primer and paint that we had left over from the basement. Some investigating to find pulls that fit the holes, {just in case one day (mercy-lawcy) I have a girl and we want to put the lovely girl pulls back on it and paint it white, again}. But after a trip to two different stores in Canada, I eventually found them online @ Lowes in the USofA {go figure!}, perfect, I mean perfect pulls to make this dresser all that I wanted it to be ::

:: So here she is in all her beautiful glory, I love the lines of it and the classic look ::
:: The perfect pulls - $20.00 for all six ::

:: I distressed the edges a bit, but I might do it a bit more, I have yet to decide ::

:: Isn't it perfect? I just love the way it looks in his room and he has yet to even try and open the drawers and I actually have somewhere to put his clothes! Glory be! ::

:: Thank you Lord for blessings that are prepared before we even know we need them ::

Beautiful job Shawna! One question... Where do you do your painting in the winter?!!! Any paint that I have ever used on a dresser that will stand the test of use has always smelled so bad that it's been a summer project! I actually have a dresser and a desk in my daughters newly finished room that are patiently waiting for better weather so that they can get sprayed!!! Just curious!

Thanks for the compliments ladies, I am pleased that I went out of my colour comfort zone, the only reason I didn't paint it black is because I didn't have enough black paint left over from my other projects! But I am truly pleased, it looks very Cape Cod to me.

Rishana - I don't spray usually, I just use a fine small roller and a good brush {bought once at the start of our reno and still going strong} and I painted this piece in our entry way...on our tile as I knew if I got any drips on the tile it would scrape right off. One thing to keep in mind is you want to paint when it is dry outside, that will help the paint dry faster. I actually finished this dresser in one evening, I started around 8:30pm {Paul thought I was crazy} and I finished around 11:30pm with obvious breaks to allow for drying of each coat. I did 2 layers of primer and 3 layers of the blue.

Looks fabby ! Good job :) To offer my "two cents"...make sure you attach it to the wall. One day he'll have all the drawers pulled out, or try standing in the bottom one and it will topple. And with any good piece of old furniture, it is SOLID !
Anyway, it looks great! "Lovely" seems to be the word of choice here..haha !

Ha Ha Ha - Thanks Keri, I doubt she wants it back, she's moved on to bigger and better things!

Yes Candice, we have been there and done that...the reason we needed a new dresser is because he destroyed his old one...like destroyed!

Hopefully this one stays in one piece!

Shawna....looks wonderful...how great that you can make over something that was probably heading to the dump. I am redoing my boys rooms downstairs now that they have moved out. I found at a second hand store today a bed frame for $20.00 that would be 4-5 times that....thanks for the inspiration.....

Do you ever sand your projects before you paint?

Shawna said...

Anonymous: No, I don't sand my projects...I've been told by the paint pro's that our paint is now strong enough that you don't have to sand prior to painting {my parents would disagree} but my china cabinet was never sanded and the paint isn't falling off yet!

I always prime, not perfectly. But I do always prime.

What a great idea Shawna! Mind if I use it too? Looking for a nice electric fireplace? Know anyone in my area that has one?
